My company recently (about six months ago) brought in an outside person for a brand new position to develop long-term plans, strategize, and restructure. Everyone knows each other and at first he asked difficult questions -- "Why do you do this? Why can't we do it a better way? Wouldn't this be more efficient?" -- which ruffled some people who had settled into comfortable ruts. Every time anyone complained, he said, "If you're not growing you're dying, and if there's no conflict you're not growing." You’re exactly right about chaos as a sign of growth.
