After being in the workforce for a good 50 years and working jobs if will from wharehouse ,construction, technical for concrete companing salary, hourly, government, private, there is not a whole lot i cannot relate to in person.
With exception of very technical positions Medical,Labs, some IT positions,Some accountin positions and others ,i have come to the decisision that the details of the position are secondary to the relationship or the enviorment you have with the employer,if thre is not any sort of respect from the upper management for the person they are hiring it is going to fail, there has to be a personal feeling when you hire somebody that you relate with,if it is not there it is like a bad marriage something is either going to happen behind the scenes or the whole they is going to blow up eventualy.Respect is something that is missing today ,honest respect, while the term respect in some cases is tinted with a bit of fear sometime it does not have to be.I am on a roll ,another reason employee, company relationships usually fails is because of upper management,They hire some body and then they either throw out there to the wolves or they micromanage them to death or they change attitudes so many time the employee makes their own dtermination that they are working for a nut or a bunch of nuts only when they are being fired to they find out that they were listening to the wrong person so the company hires another innocent person for that position and it starts all over again.

This is incredibly distressing. As a paralegal who does attorney level work, and has a 'geeky' personality and demeanor, I don't fit in with 'club culture' female office workers, or 'high roller' attorneys. The likelihood of finding a perfect fit is minimal. I've started to reflect certain interests - politically and otherwise - on the membership section of my resume as a 'screening tool' for this kind of purpose -- so that those who know they are allergic to me will not phone me. But beyond doing that, what is your best suggestion for how to find those employers with a commonality of interest? Practice area is only a marginal indicator, and doesn't tell you anything about whether the individuals inside are jokesters or party animals or corporate types or what else.

you make a good point about the relative ease of aligning yourself with those like you. i'll think about it a lot over the next couple days. but throughout the article, you relish in your prestige to the point of obnoxiousness. it's hard to read an article when i'm rolling my eyes so often.

Excellent article! Thank you so much for so clearly expressing what is virtually never spoken. This concept is so very important not only at work, but in any situation where people interact.

I especially dislike it when one can tell the corporation thinks so little of employees well-being that the restrooms are always freezing cold (one mustn't dawdle there!), with toilets that are never repaired, and there's mold all over the outside (much less the inside) exposed air ducts hanging over the tables in the lunch room, and the 'company luncheon' means YOU bring the food and are made to feel bad if you don't contribute. Of course, the owners are Republicans, and attend the church of the all mighty dollar.

Unfortunately, due to many compulsions, a large portion of working people have to put up with bosses whose value system has gone south. Those who can find a boss with similar values should thank their stars because this isn't a very common occurrence.

Hi Harrison,
I loved this article about finding an employer with similar values. Though I am a physician, it rang true for me and helped me understand why I was stagnant in my job for a while after having an outstanding medical career in India.
I do believe though, that a good boss/employer should be able to handle the differences in employees and help them achieve in spite of the differences.
One of the main reasons I was looking at your website, though, was that I am apalled at the difficulty my son who is a first year law student is having in finding a summer associate job.
I was wondering if your firm helps in legal summer associate jobs?

Great article, I am working in a clashing values environment.
Unfortunately, I am a self taught desktop publisher/advertising director.
I say unfortunate because, I am worried its going to be tough finding a values match and a pocketbook match. My current job pays for well for the work I do and I am not sure I will get close anywhere else.

Ive been looking at going back to school to learn a new trade or add credentials to the experience I have. (I am 40 with a wife and kid, seems daunting to start fresh)

You article did make me feel less lonely in my experience.
