In this article Harrison says that America was founded on a great work ethic, and there are still many people who hold that dear, but, we are moving away from that hunger to build that pioneering spirit that built this country. It takes special skills to effectively and productively motivate and direct an unmotivated work force. Many developing countries are still hungry. As the economy develops, they will follow the same cycle that developed countries have.

Efficiency or the wise use of all resources - including, time, money, and labor definitely helps a business to be more profitable, but there are other considerations too. One that comes quickly to mind, is quality. China doesn't offer a real great track record there.

I believe that anyone who enjoys the freedom of being an American also has a certain responsibility to this countries economy. Before I tranfering business overseas, make sure you have looked into why the cost variance is there. Is that country capitalizing on prison labor? Are they employing small children? Are they using manufacturing processes that will harm the environment or life? Is there a special technology or duplicable cost saving measure? Or, is the cost of living simply much lower?

I wouldn't be too quick to chase the dollar though. In our business classes, and case studies, we found that the only ingredient, in successful companies, that could not be duplicated was the people. Hire good people in the first place, and the profit and work ethic will be there.

In this article Harrison says that the smartest thing we can do in our career is find companies that are increasing efficiency in the market and go to work for them, or find a company where we can increase the efficiency of what is being done. Especially we need to embrace efficiency.
