So spot on! I would also share a comment I heard: "Measure everything and you can do anything." It is so true and has always been a part of my efforts.

However I will submit a small rebuttal to the issue of merit pay for teachers. My wife teaches 4th grade in an underprivileged neighborhood. In addition to being at the school from 7:30-4:30 with very little prep time and no private time to eat lunch (they eat with the students), she works an additional 10+ hours at home. Her school did not make AYP. Teaching these children is a real challenge that takes all of her enthusiasm to get through.

So while I do agree that there should be a merit oriented approach to weed out teachers who just show up for a paycheck, a blanket merit approach that is strictly correlated with gross child achievement will fail miserably. Because at the end of the day, the reality is that many students are just not capable in spite of a teacher's best efforts.

One more thing I would like to talk about is that as an alternative to trying to match all your online degree classes on times that you end work (since the majority of people are fatigued when they get back), try to get most of your classes on the week-ends and only a couple of courses on weekdays, even if it means a little time off your end of the week. This is fantastic because on the week-ends, you will be more rested along with concentrated upon school work. Many thanks for the different ideas I have mastered from your blog.

Great article! As a producer of a student TV show, I feel that I need to find volunteers who like their work, hence will be more productive. Which is why my show is regularly regarded as the best at our TV station! More people need to know that productivity = success!
