I, too, have started numerous things, and then quit when the going got tough. I know several multi-millionaires in the same business I had quit. These same people were encouraging others to persevere until they succeeded. I didn't listen to them. When I was a kid, I took up violin lessons because I love the sound of the instrument, but quit after 3 years.
The article is right on. Those that succeede, do so in spite of the obstacles. Thanks for a great article.

Mr. Barnes, Life is a work in progress. You have quite a list of things you have not completed. Do you feel in some way that was a failure on your part? Could you really expect to complete some of those things such as piano? In my experience, that is a lifetime commitment. Learning is lifelong. You never complete it. If you are flexible, you realize that many of these things are there to enjoy when you feel like it, and you can appreciate them and pick them back up in a month, a year, or a decade. It isn't over, till you are. There is always more to know. If you regret, not completing any of those things, why don't you go back and finish? If you don't regret them, why list them? Why not list the things you are looking forward to completing?

There are some things that you should quit. When you find the costs outweigh the benefits, you should cut your losses. If you are in a dying business, you need to re-evaluate your situation. For example, when my company sent out a letter that stated over the last 8 years, they had experienced a 8-10% loss in market each year, and they brought in a company known for liquidation, I knew I needed to be ahead of the closure. Technology had made their product obsolete, but instead of developing new products, the simply rode out the product life cycle.

There are benefits to dabbling too. The more varied activities, to which you expose your brain, the more connections it develops. Common sense is taking experience and applying it. The more experiences you have, the more applications you can find.

Being singular in focus, means you can excel in one thing. Being a Jack of All trades, means you are already cross trained. We need both kinds of people, but neither works out successfully in the wrong environment. A diverse person will feel stifled in a highly structured, large corporation, with highly defined, narrow focused job descriptions, and a highly focused specialist will be totally inept in an entrepreneurial start up.

there are a few proofreading errors in this piece. Example: "Without boring you too much, on that Christmas morning, I started the helicopter and did not follow some sort of procedure he had mandated needed to be followed every single time the helicopter was started."
